As we go into six weeks of lockdown

How are your staff?

As lockdown goes into another week people are finding it hard out there.  Not just emotionally but physically too.  As employers you are required to manage the welfare of your staff and this is difficult when you are not feeling great yourself.  The powerful effect of stress cannot be overlooked.  The stress response (fight or flight response) can be activated by psychological or mental stress which can be detrimental to one’s physical health. Combating this is a balancing act, the autonomic nervous system (the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems combined) needs to function properly and currently the nervous system is being affected by a number of things.  People have been dealing with the ever-changing vagaries of stress, loss, change and uncertainty.

Yes, they may be furloughed on a rota or working from home, which sounds amazing to those who are uncertain as to where their next paycheque is coming from. But it is by no means a pleasant place to be in.  As an employer you need to be looking out for the welfare of your staff too.  Have realistic expectations of them and ensure that they are having realistic expectations of themselves.  How long are they sitting in one position, how well are their work stations set-up?  A couple of days in a compromising position is likely to be having its toll.  These things add to the stress response.  This is something I am used to dealing with daily in my practice and when lecturing.  HSE issues advice on work -related stress and provides tools for Risk assessments as well as a Toolkit to provide helpful advice for line managers.  Please get in touch if you would like further help and advice on you and your staff’s

Its ok to breathe - in fact some would say vital!!

As I sat there feeling guilty for reading a book at 7:30am I realised that this was backward thinking. Since the start of lockdown, and in fact since the time I had to physically closed the doors to my practice over 6 weeks ago, I had worked non-stop. Arranging online consultations and letting my fellow colleagues know the ins and outs as well as the benefits of telehealth, organising one day summits for inspiration. In addition, being there for people in my orbit – my patients and my coaching clients - as well as my family. The realisation is you do not have to be on the go 24/7 it is ok to breathe! You need to realise that this is an incredibly strange time that we need to be able to process in whatever way you can, and which feels right to you. Does it mean you can carry on exactly as before lockdown – probably not. Does it mean you can develop a “new normal “– sure. You are not a machine and as a result have emotions and feelings that need to be acknowledged. Take time to do this and realise that yes you may be working from home, you may have children to home-school, you may have additional family members or friends that you are concerned about! But overall you need to be kind to yourself and give yourself time to process. You do not need to get all the jobs done that you never had time to do over the last few months or years - you can take your time to do them. Pace yourself and know that in the grand scheme of things what matters most is that you stay centred and kind to you and yours. We can get through this if we pace ourselves and don’t feel we should do anything. You are amazing and can continue to be so. So just take a breath!

Christmas wrapping with a bad back

Hi all

if you are intending to do some pressie wrapping this year my tip to you would be to either use a table or even better an iron board as you can adjust the height.  It means that you can work seated or standing and have quite a bit of room to manoeuvre.  Ensure you cover with a sheet or towel so that you do not transfer any glitter on to the board!  You should also have pre cut tape as this will stop you pulling at the tape with your teeth or awkwardly trying to cut whilst holding the present. Hope you have a fun time - Happy Christmas
